You will love it.

We went for a long weekend. Caught a free tour of the ruins around the forums. Which was fantastic. Then used the same people for a tour of the Vatican and also the Baroque Rome by night. Well worth the money.

Also most things that you want to see are very close together. Trajan's coloum, forums, temple of the Vestals and so on and so on. They are all by the Tomb of the Un-known Soldier.

I think that we found eating out very expensive, but when we go to Italy we find the best thing to do is learn please and thank you in the Lingo and eat where the locals eat. This way you will get a good deal and if you show that you are trying your best to talk in Italian they will throw stuff in for free.

Of a night go to a bar around Six in the evening. When you order a drink they normaly bring out a selection of treats to eat at the same time. We have eaten quite well doing this, but the down side is that we have become quite drunk at the same time.

All the best

Paul

Spent a few days there a couple summers ago. I loved it for the history, and the people watching. As said above, you can do a lot in a couple days.

If you like art and artifacts- The Capitoline Museum is great (Dying Gaul, among others) and the Villa Borgese is a must ( Caravaggios, Rape of Proserpina, Venus Victrix, and Apollo & Daphne, which is worth it by itsself )

If you do a lot of walking in the sun, the gardens and the park grounds attached to Borgese are a great escape from the crowds and concrete.

I stayed a few blocks walking distance from the train station, near the university, and this was a pretty decent neighborhood for a base. It's a long walk to the Vatican, but doable. The columns, collesuem, market, pantheon, the main Piazza's. . . you can nail a lot of that in a good day of walking, and another day or three for the stuff that takes longer like the museums and Vatican. If you make it out to the Christian catacombs, those are pretty cool too.

Just over the river is a great neighborhood called Trastevere (sp), where I found hands down some of the best food I've ever had. Very much a nighborhood, not a tourist area. Outstanding fun place to be in the early evening. Lots of people out and about. I want to say the place I'm thinking of is Taverna de Lupo. They make this dish called. . Volcano Pork? Or Erupting Pork. . . Vesuvio Pork maybe. . . I can't remember the translation, but yea-gods! Delicious.

Have fun!

oh and if you want to whet your whistle a little, here are some pictures from my wanderings there. Though, I think I took a lot more of the rest of Italy than I did in Rome. :p
