|

|
A few years back I seem to recall a certain company's monthly magazine producing an article about soe gamers etc who started a series of reports whereby they were all playing a particular system (leaving out companies and games as doesn't make a difference).
They all started off with an initial purchase limit e.g. £50.00 for the first month. Then each month after for a set period they had a further allowance e.g. £25.00. Each month they had to paint and game with what they had bought and supply battle reports etc.
Anyone had a go at something like this??

We had something like that in the French White Dwarf two times: in 1998 and two years ago. It was made by the French studio, and I don't know if it was translated or adapted. The original name was "le choix des armes" ...

Yeah, there was one in the US-WD as well, right about the time I stopped reading them as well. . ., so It must have been 98/99ish. It was actually sort of fun to watch it progress, if extricated from the not-so-veiled-advertising ;)
Never tried it, but it would be an interesting way to start a new period/system within a club/group I think.

We've tried it at my local club but it always ends up going wrong when someone gets way over excited and does a mass purchase of stuff...
Its how we tried to get into Confrontation..

The lines of the idea being an initial purchase of £50.00 worth of kit in Month 1. Five more months with purchases of lead to the value of £25.00, or was it slightly more, £30?.
I would be interested in trying something out as a forum experiment along the above lines - the starting of a force, from a new period/game, for me anyway, purchasing from a trader or manufacturer who posts upon the forum. Also, since I'm not under any painting deadlines as a pro-painter, oh er, the naughty name , or someone who isn't involved in the SCW demo game at Partizan next year, is this still going to happen?, I could actually put my full motivation behind the project.
I know the trade increase from myself wouldn't amount to a huge increase in the traders profits, £175 - £200 over a six month period, but it might be fun to do. Posting updates on purchases and painting schedules, books and internet sites visited for info' etc.
I'll leave it there,
Roy

What I liked was the non studio painted models too, showing some true gamers!

I think the problem here would be the diverse nature of this group, all prefer different systems and periods. Also a rule system that allows use of the force as it progresses in size.
Limits would have to be set possibly with RRP in mind to make it fair as traders would have a clear advantage (except when it came to volume of painting).
Apart from that I am thinking of pushing it at a local club. It does interest me and hopefully motivation to get stuff painted!

I can remember the two times I saw it done in the UK white Dwarf mags some years ago now and it always struck me as something I wouldn't mind trying.
Sticking to the principles I mentioned above I might just look into the prospects, in 28mm Historical, this weekend.

I remember seeing this done twice in White Dwarf as well. It did look like good fun now you mention it. A good way of building an army gradually and keeping the motivation to finish it.
I wouldn't mind having a go at this as well...maybe I will

That would be an interesting idea, to do something like that on the forum, but there are many "buts" to it.
1. choice of the system ( so many, and so different )
2. choice of the manufacturer - for 50Ł You can buy 10, or 60 minis..
3. most of us, on the forum are painters first, and gamers second ( anything more away from the first ). For a gamer, drybrushing an army is a good idea, for a painter it is an outrage
If there were enough people interested, than it could be fun, but it really demands alot of mobilization. I remember when there was a "blog competition" on one forum, and almost noone finished their small armies in time:P

Alternatively it could be a painting 'pledge' so a planned approach to an army regardless of system etc, a 6 month forecast of what will get painted etc and posted on here.
Again it would be a different output by painters and gamers depending on how they do things, my gaming figures are often nowhere near what I class as my better minis, but others would disagree, redzed would be tensing up as I mention this
